MASON CITY — Watch out for blood-sucking hitch-hikers if you’re walking in woods and grasslands this summer.

It looks like another good year for ticks, which can cause debilitating Lyme disease.

“It’s been a pretty good crop so far,” said Lyric Bartholomay, a professor of medical entomology and head of the Lyme Disease Surveillance program at Iowa State University.

“The ticks are out there,” said Brian Hanft, manager of environmental health service for the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “The trick is, how do you control them?”

Hanft said ticks are generally stopped by DEET-based repellents. He recommends a concentration of 35 percent DEET, which lasts longer than the 15 percent variety. Other tips:

If you walk in the woods or in tall grass, wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, and tuck the pants into your socks. Light-colored clothes make it easier to see the tiny critters.

Genetic modification turns plant virus into delivery vehicle for green-friendly insecticide, say University of Florida researchers
Gainesville, Florida
December 12, 2006

A plant-destroying virus farmers call one of their worst enemies may soon be an ally in the fight against crop pests and mosquitoes, say University of Florida (UF) researchers.

Scientists genetically modified tobacco mosaic virus so that it produces a natural, environmentally friendly insecticide, turning the pathogen into a microscopic chemical factory, said Dov Borovsky, an entomologist with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The modified virus is almost completely harmless to plants and simply produces the insecticide.

Plants inoculated with the virus quickly accumulate enough of the insecticide to kill insect pests that consume their leaves, said Borovsky, who works at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory in Vero Beach and is affiliated with UF’s Genetics Institute. Once harvested, the plants can be processed to make mosquito control products.

Morning Edition, November 30, 2006 · As resistance to traditional insecticides grows in head lice, some researchers are abandoning poison shampoos and taking a different approach. Their goal is a physical, mechanical way of killing the parasites, like hammering a stake through the heart of these little vampires.

One idea is to dry lice out, sucking out their moisture until they become harmless little husks.

IN THE LAB

Victory in louse wars?

Head lice -- yuck -- have developed a creeping resistance to common insecticides. Maybe it's time for a new tack -- like blasting them with hot air.
By Regina Nuzzo, Special to The Times
November 13, 2006

IN the war against head lice, we face an enemy that is fast and plentiful, with nimble armies that can evolve and outwit standard weaponry. Will we ever take the lead in this scalp-biting, nit-picking arms race?

Last month, experts from around the world gathered in Buenos Aires to swap battle tactics at the Third International Congress on Phthiraptera, the group of 3,000 species of wingless parasitic insects that includes Pediculus capitis, bane of parents and school nurses across the land.

It's all about "the birds and the bees." And now, "the silkworm moths and the fruit flies."

A chemical ecologist and a genetics researcher at the University of California, Davis, have joined forces to trick fruit flies into thinking that silkworm moths are potential mates.

Groundbreaking research in the labs of chemical ecologist Walter Leal and genetics researcher Deborah Kimbrell shows that genetically engineered fruit flies responded to the silkworm moth scent of a female.
